Abstract     Assessment of transient ST-segment episodes of the electrocardiogram compatible with myocardial ischemia requires long-term ambulatory monitoring while the patient engages in normal daily activities. Accurate automated techniques to detect transient ST episodes and to differentiate between real ischemic and nonischemic ST episodes are necessary. In this paper we present research efforts of the Laboratory of Biomedical Computer Systems and Imaging at the University of Ljubljana in developing research resources for the tasks of development and evaluation of automated transient ischemia detectors. necessary research resources are: tools providing intuitive insights to the data with respect to characterize the data in order to design automated detection techniques; commonly accepted or standardized database for development and evaluation of transient ischemia detectors; and commonly accepted performance metrics with evaluation protocol. We describle graphic tools developed to represent transient ST events in the ambulatory data. On the basis of multiparameter trends of the features, using the 2-hour records of the European Society of Cardiology ST-T Database, we characteized and quantified differences in the behavior of transient ischemic and nonischemic ST changes, and characterized the temporal patterns of ischemic episodes. The study yielded development of a new ST database contaiing 24-hour ambulatory records. We present the selection criteria for records, events of interest, annotation protocol, and tools to annotate. We also describe our own developed and commonly accepted performance measures and evaluation protocol to assess the performance of transient ischemia detectors.
