Abstract     The project "Hospital Treatment" (HOSTREAT) supports health care management on the national level, such as the Ministry of Health and its professional services. A higher quality of information was the main project objective, so much attention was drawn and paid to data functionalism, verification and data storage. Recently, the project copes with knowledge discovery in hospital databases by the methods of machine learning. Implementation of seven auxiliary classification files, such as the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) and, furhter, a revised edition of the data domain set were preliminary tasks. An extensitve effort was made to verify input data. The computer project applied a special database management tool, developed by the author, partially financed by the national research fund. The paper deals with the operative project phase (design & implementation), pointing out the problems of the database, proper for fuure methods of machine learning. At present, data are collected by 28 hospitals and 18 rehabilitation centers, producing around 324.000 medical events. Medical records come in from seven hospiralisation areas in 83 input files. Each input file enters 6 phases during verification and 13 phases during data aggregation. The distinct phases are recognized by proper structuring (agglutination) of file and program names. A remarkable progress in data quality was achieved. In future, a more economic designing tool would render easier program maintenance. Files with aggregated data are not proper for advanced computer aided analysis, especially because of latent tautologies.
