Abstract     The gingival fluid of 20 randomly selected patients with different stages of periodontal disease was examined for the presence of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Gingival fluid samples were collected with paper points. At the sampling sites four clinical parameters were assessed: plaque index, gingival index, probing depth and clinical attachment loss. The presence of EMV was determined with the use of the polymerase chain reaction. Amplified copies of the EBV nuclear antigen (EBNA) 1 gene were indentified by the detection of 276 bp fragments of DNA as seen under UV light in agarose gel. The specificity of the fragments was verified by the hybridization method (DNA enzyme immunoassay). EBV was demonstrated mainly in samples obtained from sites with advances periodontal tissue destruction, suggesting that the virus may play a part in the progression of periodontal disease. Viral studies of gingival fluid open a new path to better understanding of the aetiology of periodontal disease.
