Abstract		Astma is by definition a chronic infection of the lower respiratory system. The disease is genetically determined. Therapy must normalize the symptoms of the disease and the epithelium of the respiratory system. In the case of allergic asthma, therapy can be even more successful if the effect of allergens and triggers is diminished. A better understanding of the disease can lead to a reduction in the prevalence of asthma and new therapeutic approaches can improve the patient's quality of life due to better management of the disease and reduction of unfavourable effects of long term medication.
Summary		Po definiciji je astma kronično vnetje dihal. Bolezen je genetsko pogojena. Z zdravljenjem moramo normalizirati simptome bolezni in stanje epitela dihal. Pri alergijski astmi je zdravljenje lahko uspešnejše, če zmanjšamo tudi učinek alergenov in sprožilcev. Boljše razumevanje bolezni lahko vodi v zmanjšanje prevalence astme, novi terapevtski pristopi pa v večjo kakovost življenja bolnikov zaradi boljšega vodenja bolezni in zmanjšenja neugodnih učinkov dolgotrajne uporabe zdravil.
