Abstract     New connective attachment formation on the root surface of a periodontally diseased tooth is one of the goals of periodontal therapy. Fibroblasts originating in the periodontal ligament are the principal cells involved in this process. The aim of our study was to determine whether treatment with the erbium laser inhibits the attachment of fibroblasts to the root surface. Twenty samples were prepared from the lateral root surface of extracted upper incisors. Fifteen samples were exposed to erbium laser therapy, while the remaining five were left untreated and served as controls. The samples were incubated for 40 hours in a medium containing 2.5 x 10 power on 4 fibroblasts per ml. The results showed that laser treatment at energy settings of 60 and 80 mJ had no effect on fibroblast attachment, whereas treatment at the highest energy setting (100 mJ) resulted in a significant reduction in the number of attached fibroblasts. We conclude that judicious use of the erbium laser for periodontal therapy does not prevent the formation of new connective attachment on the tooth root.
