Abstract     We studied the effect of the radiation dose on the growth rate, mitotic activity and chromosomal aberrations after onions were irradiated and subsequently grown both under laboratory and field conditions. Biological effects of acute radiation under laboratory conditions cannot be measured on the basis of chromosomal aberrations in plant meristems only. A complete mitotic blockade in irradiated onions grown under field conditions was a key cytogenetic indicator of their potential viability. However, almost normal mitotic activity in roots and decreasing chromosomal aberrations in the prolonged growth period were the two indications of onion viability. It is not just the extent of the clastogenic effects in root meristems, but rather the meristem ability to cope with them, which is the important factor in plants in natural environment.
Summary     Proučili smo učinke sevanja na rast, celično aktivnost in obseg kromosomskih poškodb v meristematskih celicah pri obsevanih koreninah in čebulicah čebule (Allium cepa L.).
