Abstract		A total of 912 extracted human lower permanent molars were examined for the presence of a protostylid, and the microscopic structure of the protostylid pit was evaluated on 60 teeth. The majority of the protostylids (59.5%) occurred in third molars. In 80% of cases the only external sign was a pit that marked the entrance into a fissure between the mesiobuccal cusp and the protostylid, expressed solely by a dentine core.
