Abstract		The aim of this graduation thesis is to present a review of a recent research in the field of information storage and retrieval called "intelligent" information retrieval. Artificial intelligence methods are used to increase the effectiveness of information retrieval systems and to provide un-mediated access to information resources. Architecture and perfomance of knowledge-based systems as well as knowledge aquistion and knowledge representation are considered. Knowledge representation schemas, such as semantic networks, frames and production rules are presented. Then information storage and retrieval which includes text representation, retrieval techniques, retrieval evaluation and information needs is described. After presentation of basic features of intelligent information and expert intermediary systems, a brief description of I3R, IOTA, and UNAMED systems is given.
