Abstract     Since there is by estimation 2000 patients with multiple sclerosis in Slovenia, it means that each general practitoner/family doctor has also one or two, rarely three patients with this diagnosis. General symptoms which could mean the onset of multiple sclerosis are frequent with other patients, too. A thorough neurological examination should be performed also in a general practitioner's office, together with a careful observation of the patient. When the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis is confimed, the patient should not be turned over from a general practitioner/family doctor to a permanent specialistic care. The help of general practitioner/family doctor is needed by the whole family: from the regulation of disability status to the providing of appliances, coordinationof treatment, permanent support and, last but not least, treatment of other diseases that a patient with multiple sclerosis might get. it is important that doctors learn to approach uncurable diseases in a rational way, and plan their measures so that their realization can nevertheless offer some professional satisfaction, despite the prognosis of the disease against which they are helpess. Their role is also to help the patient and his/her family learn about as many written informative materials as possible, and about the possibilities of help. At an advanced stage of illness, and also at the confirmation of diagnosis, house calls are of vital necessity. It is important to keep up with professional literature as nowadays patients have an easy and fast access to information. The article deals also with a particular case of a patient.
