Abstract     Changes in the social system, standards and the accelerated tempo of life are all constantly shaping the modern family, which is burdened by many obligations. Established traditional eating habits have changed. Family meals are increasingly rare. The resulting gap is filled by new methods of nourishment. Among them is primarily fast food which, through advertising, is gaining in popularity with the young. Their susceptibility to new products was our motive for conducting this research with primary school children. They are in a phase of growth and development and for them a balanced, correct diet is of crucial importance. We conducted a survey with 209 randomly selected schoolchildren (98 girls and 111 boys), with the aim of learning about their eating habits, their knowledge of protective nourishment and, in this connection, their tendency towards consuming fast food. We have determined that schoolchildren are well acquainted with healthy lifestyle and eating habits and do not rank fast food in this category. They prefer fast food mainly because it is tasty and practical. 51,5% of the subjects eat fast food only occasionally and 30.6% several times per month, 13,6% several times a week. 1,5% of the subjects never consume fast food. We can protect our health by strengthening awareness regarding a healthy lifestyle and by spreading knowledge on the correct preparation of food and we can all contribute to this: parents, doctors, nutritionists and teachers.
Summary     S spremembami družbenega sistema, standarda in hitrega načina življenja se sodobna družina nenehno oblikuje in prilagaja mnogim obveznostim. Spremenjeni so tudi ustaljeni tradicionalni vzorci. Vrzel zapolnjujejo nove oblike prehranjevanja. S krepitvijo zavesti o zdravem načinu življenja in širjenja znanja o pravilni pripravi hrane varujemo zdravje, k čemer lahko prispevamo prav vsi: starši, zdravniki, načrtovalci prehrane in učitelji.
