Abstract     Vegetarian food is very popular among the young, while at the same time professional opinions about its advantages or negative consequences are diverse. The purpose of our research was to determine how widespread vegetarianism is among Slovenian students and how, if at all, it affects their health. We conducted the research with 1,947 students in first and fourth of studies, who were systematically examined during the academic year 1996/97. Of these, 86 had not eaten meat for at least 6 months and at most 9 years. 83 were ovolactovegetarians and only three restricted their diets to vegetables andcereals alone. We were interested in the differences between some indicators of the health condition of vegetarians and non-vegetarians found on the basis of a systematic examination. The test involved nourishment and medical anamnesis, clinical examination and basic laboratory tests of blood and urine. The results were statistically processed and evaluated with t-test. Four per cent of the subjects were vegetarians. Females are more often inclined towards vegetarianism than males. In general vegetarians tend to be lighter in weight and to have lower average middle arterial pressure. Female vegetarians have characteristically lower values of erythrocytes and haemoglobin. The proportion of vegetarian females with oligomenorrhea is greater than inthe control group. Finally, we recount the case of a long-term vegetarian female with developed severe deficiency anaemia.
Summary     Vegetarijanska prehrana je me mladimi priljubljena, sočasno pa sostrokovna mnenja o njeni koristnosti in tudi možnih nevarnih posledicah za zdravlje zelo deljena. Namen naše raziskave je bil ugotoviti, koliko je vegetarijanstvo razširjeno med slovenskimi študenti, in kako, če sploh, vpliva na njihovo zdravje. V raziskavo smo vključili 1947 študentov prvih in četrtih letnikov, ki so bili sistematsko pregledani v študijskem letu 1996/97. Od vseh pregledanih jih 86 sploh ni uživalo mesa najmanj 6 mesecev in največ 9 let; 83 od teh pa se je hranilo ovolaktovegetarijansko, le trije so uživali rastlinsko - žitno prehrano. Zanimale so nas razlike med nekaterimi kazalci zdravstvenega stanja vegetarijancev in nevegetarijancev, ki smo jih ugotovili na polagi sistematskega pregleda. Slednji je obsegal prehrambeno in zdravstveno anamnezo, klinični pregled in osnovne laboratorijske analize krvi in seča. Dobljene rezultate smo statistično obdelali in ovrednotili s tesom t. V opazovani populaciji smo ugotovili 4% vegetarijancev. Za vegetarijansko prehrano se odločijo pogosteje ženske kot moški. V splošnem vegetarijanci nagibajo k nižji telesni teži, imajo tudi nižji povprečni srednji arterijski tlak. Vegetarijanke imajo statistično značilno nižje vrednosti eritrocitov in hemoglobina. Tudi delež vegetarijank z oligomenorejo je večji kot v primerjalni skupini. Na koncu prispevka podajamo klinični primer dolgoletne egetarijanke z razvito hudo deficitarno anemijo.
