Abstract     Lyme borreliosis is the most widespread tick-borne zoonosis in Europe and the USA; in our geographic region it is endemic. The disease may affect different organ systems. Since its course is variable and frequently unpredictable it often represents a hard nuck to crack for dijagnosis and treatment and many questions about this interesting disese remain unresolved. undoubtedly, early recognizing and treatment makes possible a favourable outcome for the majority of patients. From the rare reports in the world literature it is evident that transplacental transmission of B. burgdorferi in pregnancy represents a potential cause for damage or even death of the fetus not only in unreated but also inpatients treated with an oral antibiotic. In the period from 1991 through 1996 the course of the illness and the autcome of pregnancy were investigated ina prospective study of 74 consecutively enrolled pregnant women with typical erythema migrans. Patients were examined and laboratory test values, serologic tests for B. burgdorferi and lues and electrocardiographic tracing were performed prior to the initiation of antibiotic treatment. They were followed-up clinically and serologically for 18 months after the institution of therapy, their babies were observed by a pediatrician for a longer period. The ages of the pregnant women ranged from 17 years to 42 years (median, 28 years). Forty-five (60.8%) patients recalled incurring a tick bite, six (8.1%) an insect bite and 23 (31.1%) did not remember any bite. The diameter of the skin lesions at first examination varied from 5 cm to 60 cm (median, 10 cm). Fifty-one patients (68.9% had local and/or mild constituional symptoms.(Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
