Abstract     Laryngeal neoplasm is one of the most common cancer in the head and neck region. Treatment results in early laryngeal carcinoma are favourable, the five years survival for early carcinoma of the vocal cords being 96%. In advanced stage (stages III and IV) less than 50% of patients will survive five years, even when undergoing mutilating surgery - laryngectomy. Therefore it is important to diagnose laryngeal carcinoma at an early stage, or better yet in its precancerous state. Presently microscopic examination supported by modern methods such as imunohystocemistry, can diagnose laryngeal carcinoma at an early stage, althought they cannot predict its biologicalbehaviour and neither natural course of laryngeal epithelial hyperplastic lesions. The current studies try to associate the prognosis with the results of quantitative measurements obtained by flow and image cytometry. According to some authors, particulary the texture features should improve definitionof agresive features of carcinoma and foretell prognosis of the epithelial hyperplastic lesions of the larynx. The aim of this study was to analyze the morphometric, photometric and nuclear texture features of the nuclei of normal laryngeal mucosa and laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma by means of image cytometer. The smears of 17 vocal cords and 36 laryngeal tumors were collected. They were stained by Feulgen thionin method. Image analysis was performed on an automated, high resolution image cytometer Cyto-Savant TM (Oncometrics Technol. Corp., Vancouver, Kanada). Probabylity density function of 78 nuclear features for the tree study groups, - i.e. normal diploid, tumor diploid and tumor aneuploid, were calculated. The analysis of variance was also performed and discrimination potential of different nuclear features was tested.(Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
