Abstract     The aim of our study to establish whether certain sonographic signs and anamnestic data of women with threatened abortioncan be used to identify an increased risk of spontaneous abortion, premature delivery and low birth witht of children (unfavourable pregnancy outcome), which factors are connected with the increased risk of an unfavourable pregnancy outcome and what risk they actually represent. The study included pregnant women with bloddy discharge from the vagina up tothe 13th week of singleton pregnacy with a viable fetus. Sonographic investigation was used to measure the crown-rump length (CRL) and to discover subchorionic hematomas. By taking the history and from the enclosed documents, data regarding age. previous spontaneous abortions, deliveries, premature deliveries, uterine malformations (UMF), surgery for UMF and infertility treatment were collected. Based on data about further hospitalization, the delivery report and inquiries sent to the subjects' homes, the pregnancy outcome was established. By logistic regression, the connection between the observed factors and the unfavourable pregnancy outcome was verified. From among 296 (100%) investigated women, 224 (77,6%) gave birth on the expected date of delivery (EDD) to a child of normal birth weight, 24 (8,1%) gave birth onthe EDD to a child of low birth weight, 27 (9,2%) had a premature delivery and 20 (6,7%) had a spontaneous abortion, 11 of these (3,7%) in the first and 9 (3,0%) in the second trimester of pragnancy. CRL <10. centile up to the 9th week of gestation was connected with an increased, 28,6% risk of spontaneous abortion in the firts timester (odds ratio (OR) = 12,8, 95% confidence intervals (CI): 3,0-54,6).(Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
