Abstract     The number and social and demographic characteristics of elderly non-consulters (aged >_ 65 years) in general practice offices were established. Patients classified as non-consulters were those who had not seen a general practitioner in Ljubljana Health Centre over the previous 12 months or longer. After excluding those who had died or moved away, a random sample of 96 non-consulters, all residents in Ljubljana Centre Municipality, was investigated. Municipality, was investigated. The questionnaire was prepared according to the original Barber's postal screening questionnaire supplemented with questions on physical independence, functional ability, satisfaction with life, estimates of own health, use of social and health services. Among the screened non-consulters there were almost twice as many women as men, half of them married, one-third widowed, some single or divorced, while 1 female lived out-wedlock. The investigated non-consulters had a good educational background, half of them lived with a spouse, one-third lived alone, while only 4 had no one to help them and one of those four was also socially isolated. Over 80% of the investigated non-consulters were fully mobile physically, the majority of them had no problems with fecal and urinary continence. For the most part they claimed to gave good eyesight and hearing. All, but 7 persons were independent in their daily routine activities while 8 required help when takin a bath. Over the previous 12 months, 13.5% of the screened nonconsulters were hospitalized, 41.7% had drug therapy prescribed. 41.7% non-consulters reported chronic diseases and 24% were completely free from complaints. The majority of the screened non-consulters were satisfied with their life and were feeling healthy, 16.7% mentioned loneliness.(Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
