Abstract     In Slovenia Lyme borreliosis (LB) is an endemic disease. The number of registered patients increases from year to year. Like in the rest of Europe and USA, in Slovenia too LB represents the commonest zoonosis transmitted by ticks. It is caused by the spirocheta Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. The clinical course occurs in stages. The disease affects multiple organ systems. The commonest clinical sign of the early localized infection by borrelia is a skin lesion called erythema migrans (EM). It can be accompained by additional symptoms and signs of infection. EM is easy to recognize. This permitts early diagnosis of infection, effcient treatment and prevention of progress of the disease. In vitro studies show that B. burgdorferi susceptibility to different antibiotics is good. In spite of multiple prospective clinical studies in adult patients with EM, for the moment, no single antibiotic superior to others was identifed. Studies of all antibiotics used for treatment to this moment report noneffciency of treatment and development of major and/or minor manifestations of LB. Our literature search failed to identify similar prospective clinical studies in children with EM. In our prospective study we compared clinical efficiency and drug - related adverse events of cefuroxime axetil and phenoxymethylpenicillin in treatment of children with solitary EM. Basic demografc features and clinical data about patients were collected via questionaire. The effciency of treatment, the development of major and/or minor signs of LB and drug - related adverse events were identified by follow - up visits of the patients.
