Abstract     Postoperative acetabular development and long-term results were analysed in 39 patients which underwent 44 Salter's osteotomies for developmental dysplasia of the hip. The average age at the time of the operation was 54 months (21 to 111 months). Both hips of each patient were evaluated rentgenographicaly once preoperatively and five times postoperatively. The last rentgenographic evaluation was made on average 10 years (7 to 13 years) after Salter's osteotomy. Physical examination of both hips was performed 7 to 13 years postoperatively. CE angle averaged 25 degrees immediately after the operation. The amount of operative CE angle correction averaged 14 degrees. The acetabular index averaged 18 degrees immediately after Salter's osteotomy and was operatively corrected by 9 degrees. In 30 hips (68%) excellent or good rentgenographic result was present 7 to 13 years postoperatively. On physical examination 57% of the hips were completely asymtomatic 7 to 13 years postoperatively. No complications in terms of aseptic necrosis of the femoral head or necrosis of the articular cartilage were found postoperatively. In the group of patients with postoperative CE angle of more than 24 degrees (21 hips) CE angle was significantly bigger during the entire follow-up period compared to the group with postoperative CE angle of less or equal to 24 degrees (23 hips). Acetabular index was significantly smaller at the last follow-up (3 to 7 years postoperatively) in group of patients with postoperative CE angle of more than 24 degrees. Positive correlation was shown between the amount of operative CE angle correction and long term rentgenographic results. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
