Abstract     The types of atherosclerotic lesions, the mechanism of progression of coronary atherosclerosis, reasons of plaque vulnerability and discruption, and the subsequent thrombotic phenomenon leading to acutre coronary syndromes are now better understood. Several risk factors leading to progressio of atherosclerotic lesions have been identified. Among them, plasma cholesterol appears to play a major role in the development ot plaques while superimposed thrombotic complications are probably the major cause of accelerated arterial narrowing and acute occlusion. This review focuses on the coronary unstable atherosclerotic plaque and complicating thrombosis.
