Abstract     At the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Ljubljana we encounter sudden death through post mortem services, especially in conducting autopsies which we perform for a region which covers nearly 600,000 inhabitants, as well as through clinical autopsies on persons who die within 24 hours after the admission to any department of the Clinical Centre in Ljubljana. In the latter group we encounter a high percentage (around 80%) of sudden death. The authors reviewed autopsy reports from a six-year period (1992-1997) and identified those autopsies where the immediate cause of death was some form of sudden cardiac death. All of the selected autopsy reports contain brief anamneses and post mortem diagnoses supported by histological findings.
