Abstract     AB The terrestrial isopods are used as test organisms in a single species toxicity test for metals. The aim of our work was to investigate the effects of copper in a single species toxicity test with Porcellio scaber. The feeding rate was measured during five weeks of exposure of animals on a series of copper contaminated leaves. Moulting was also observed. We found out that 2 000 micro g Cu/ g affect the feeding rate of Porcellio scaber. At 1000 micro g Cu/ g the feeding rate was also affected, however not statisticaly significant (t-test). An elevated concentration of copper did not cause any changes in animals during five weeks of exposure. On the basis of these results we can conclude that 2 000 micro g Cu/ g is the LOEC concentration but the NOEC concentration is lower than 1000 micro g Cu/ g. This is in the range of concentration found in the polluted environment. Therefore the toxicity test with P. scaber is enough sensitive for testing the toxicity of copper in industrially polluted environment.
