Abstract     The effect of aluminum on the ordering and dynamics of lipid molecules in membranes was investigated in mycelia of the ectomycorrhizal fungus Amanita muscaria with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). We found that the membrane is structured into distinct coexistent lipid regions. The relative decrease of the portion of the less ordered membrane domains was induced by the long-term action of aluminum in the basal medium (0,1,10 mM Al). The ordering of both, the ordered and the less ordered domains was also diminished. Probably the membrane changes induced by aluminum influence membrane permeability. This is important for mycelial growth and also for the transport and exchange of minerals between the fungus and the plant.
