Abstract     Since 1985 analysis of DNA polymorphism has become the most reliable methods for personal identification and determination of relatedness in forensic medicine and in criminal investigation. Polymorphic DNA loci used for this purpose do not code for proteins, and they are spread over the whole genome. They are neutral, meaning that they do not provide any information on individuals except for their identity. A brief overvies is given of different types of DNA polymorphisms, and their application in forensic medicine and criminal investigations.
