| Abstract | In the past it was thought that viruses were an unimportant link in the dynami circulation of matter and energy in the pelagic food chains. More recent studies have whown that the speed of cell lysis in marine microbial associations is both rapid and important. This, of course, has important consequences in the formation of a new concept of food chains in ocean and fresh water biotopes. | |
