Abstract     Environmental or lifestyle factors greatly affect the probability that the genetic predispositional fault(s) of the susceptibility for atherosclerotic vascular disease (AVD are translated into clinical events that we recognize as coronary heart disease (CHD), peripheral vascular disease (PVD), or cerebrovascular disease (CVD). In the present paper we are dealing with description and evaluation of these modifiable risk factors as with the evidence for lifestyle interventions as a measure for reducing AVD. The development and progression of CHD is directly related and dependent on the presence of various so called risk factors, like obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and cigarette smoking, influencing also the development of various types of dyslipidemias, hypertension, glucose intolerance and diabetes mellitus as well as abrnomalities of fibrinolysis. Besides highly recognized international cardiological professional societies also the WHO Expert Committee recommended dietary changes to lower the proportion of fats and reducing the amount of calories to prevent obesity, avoidance of smoking, and also promotion of regular habitual aerobic exercise as an important part of the population preventive strategy. Recent studies have revealed that intensive multiple interventions significantly decreased rate of progression and, in some cases, led to regression of the severity of atherosclerotic lesions in persons with CHD. Nonpharmacological measures of healthy lifestyle implementation represent the cornerstone of both primary and secondary prevention of AVD and to be effective in the population need national commitment, policy, planning, and development. The preventive efforts are of spcial importance, since treatment of AVD becomes very expernsive for the society.
