Abstract     Permanent health impairment after myocardial infarction (MI) has an important impact on the quality of life. The aim of the present study was to determine the quality of life in Slovene patients after MI in comparison with healthy controls and to explore the influence of different aspects of the quality of life. We included 337 patients several years after MI and 217 healthy controls. Data were gathered by questionnaire. As we expected, patients after MI reported having significantly more health problems. In spite of this, they had a better social life, were less likely to feel loneliness and had more self-confidence and selfesteem. There were no significant differences in general satisfaction with life and happiness. In conclusion, the quality of life in Slovene patients several years after MI is good and comparable to healthy controls. One possible reason for this finding could be the high motivation and education of our group of patients. They had better education that the healthy controls and adequate control of some classic coronary risk factors (smoking, physical activity, diet).
