Abstract     The goal of our research was to establish the correlation between demonstration of specific antibodies to avian pneumovirus in serum samples of broiler breeders and clinical manifestation of swollen head disease. In three years period 17 broiler breeder flocks were clinically and serologicaly monitored. Swollen head syndrom was observed in 8 breeder flocks. High morbidity with clinical signs of swelling of the head an conjunctivitis and some cases torticollis and opistotonus were observed mostly in females in the beginning of the production period. Mortality was low, from <1 to 6.5%. Although fall in egg yield was recorded during 1-2 weeks, an average egg production per hen and hatchability were not affected. By enzyme immunoassay antibodies to APV were detected in all examined flocks, there was no difference in serological response between clinical affected and apparently healthy flocks. The results indicated lack of correlation between the presence of antibodies in sera and clinical manifestation of the disease. Outbreaks of swollen head syndrome is not associated only with virus infection, a very important role is played also by poor management and stress. Increasing of positive reactions in 1997 indicate also high exposure of breeders to APV.
