Abstract     The early stages-the period between 1896 and 1940 - of X-ray therapy in Croatia were studied on the basis of the articles published in Liječnički vjesnik (The Medical Journal) and Radiološki glasnik (Radiological Herald). The research showed that up until 1917 there were only several attempts X-ray application therapy attempts. K. Huhn, M. V. Crlenjak, R. Joković, I. Herzog, and M. Čačković in Zagreb and V. Florschuetz in Osijek applied X -rays in treating skin diseases, tubercular lymphomas, and hypertrophies of the prostate. Liječnički vjesnik of 1898 reports on the development of X-ray therapy abroad, primarily on the basis of articles published in German journals, but also of those in Austrian, French, Czech, and English medical journals. From 1920 onwards experts from Prague (K. Gawalowski, B. Polland, A Sigmund), Vienna (D. Eisenstadter, G. Holzknech), Munich (H. Kleebinder), Paris (C. Lian, R. Barrieu), Belgrade (Lj. Vulović, D. J. Jovanović, S. Janković, W. Alberti), Valjevo (B. Gradjanski) and Sarajevo (A. M. Hudak) have published in Liječnički vjesnik articles on their X-ray therapy experiments and results. In 1925 famous G. Holzknecht accepted the invitation to come to Zagreb and shared his most recent X-ray therapy experience with the members of the Croatian Medical Association. Croatian physicians did not report on their X-ray therapy observations in Liječniški vjesnik until 1925, when the situation changed considerably. The increase in the number of articles on X-ray therapy published by Croatian physicians coincides with the chronology of the founding of specialist X-ray departments in hospitals as well as that of the clinics and the Central Radiological Institute at the Faculty of Medicine of the Zagreb University.
