Abstract		A short review of the development of radiology is followed by the report on our experiences in the treatment of skin cancers and other dermatoses with soft X-ray irradiation. At the Dermatology Department of Maribor Teaching Hospital, Slovenia, this therapy has been in use since 1952. Between 1967 and 1993, i.e. in a 27- year period, 2448 patients with skin cancer or praecancerosis and 665 patients with other dermatoses were irradiated with "Dermopan". Following precise patient selection and with an appropriate treatment scheme, the results of the irradiation therapy were especially good in skin cancers, the cosmetic effect being satisfactory as well. The number of recurrences was low, on an average 5% of all cases. Due to the further progress of dermatology as well as modern operative techniques, irradiation with soft X-rays has lost its value in dermatologic treatment. Nevertheless, in certain cases soft X-ray irradiation still remains the therapy of choice.
