Abstract | Consciousness includes both arousal and awareness of the self and environment. The clinician confronted with the unconscious patient is faced with the problem of first localising the lesion and then determining the likely cause. Causes of impared consciousness are many, but only few are primarily neurological. The physical examination including the neurological assesement is the basic step to the further management. Besides routine Iaboratory screening other neurodiagnostic tests are helpful when the neurological cause of unconsciousness is in question.
Možni so številni vzroki motenj zavesti, redkeje so primarno nevrološki. Klinični pregled bolnika vključuje tudi oceno nevrološkega stanja. Poleg osnovnih laboratorijskih preiskav nam pri opredelitvi nevroloških vzrokov nezavesti pomagajo usmerjene nevrodiagnostične preiskave.
