Abstract     Meningitis syndrome is the most common infection of the central nervous system. On the basis of duration of symptoms before the disease it can be classified in acute, subacute and chronic forms, by the causative organisms in bacterial, viral and other etiologies. Viruses are the most common cause. In Slovenia the most common causes of bacterial meningitis in children are Haemophilus influenzae type b, Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Borrelia burgdorferi; and among viruses enteroviruses and Central European meningoencephalitis virus. Prompt treatment of bacterial meningitis is essential in presenting additional brain damage. Chemoprophylaxis and active immunization with presently available vaccines are the most important issues in prophylaxis of meningitis.
Virusi so najpogostejši povzročitelji akutnega meningitisa.
