Abstract     The introduction of computerized perimetry has provided a new approach to the study of retinal function. Automated perimetry provides quantitative data for visual field, not only to determine the outher borders of visual field, but also to permit analysis of retinal neurosensoric function. Automated perimetry may detect neuron loss at an earlier stage, which was not possible with manual kinetic perimetry. Visual field defects are commonly associated with diabetic retinopathy. Visual field loss is greater in advenced stages of diabetic retinopathy and in non-insulin dependent diabetes. Visual field defects are often evident in diabetic patients before the development of retinopathy. Areas of capillary non-perfusion are associated with reduced retinal sensitivity and so automated static perimetry can serve as a method for estimation of retinal perfusion in diabetic patients.
