Abstract     Recent insights in the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease (CDV) and developement of efficient gene technology procedures have made it possible to develop animal models for CDV gene therapy. Genes, identified in many hereditary disorders predisposing to CDV and pathological processes, such as atherosclerosis, thrombosis, restenosis, arterial hypertension, revascularisation, ischemia/reperfusion injury, heart failure and transplantant rejection, have become targets for new therapeutical strategies. The clinical application of gene therapy awaits the development of improved vectors and strategies to control the delivery of therapeutical genes and their expression in the host
