Abstract     The four muscles, forming the anterior abdominal wall are described. The article deals with their origins and insertions, aponeuroses and sheaths. Entities important for the surgeons operating in the groin area are stressed. Fibrous structures, especially formation of the inguinal ligament and its reinforcing structures are described. The passage and its borders from the abdominal cavity into the tigh is also mentioned. To clarfy things, the descent of thetestis is described, as this is actually the reason, why the inguinal canal exists. The descent and the canal are in this way or another responsible for the weakness of the abdominal wall in this region and thus allow some inguinal hernias to occur.
