Abstract     A historical survey of various operative methods used for repair of inguinal hernias is presented. The so-called classical operations, which remained prevalnt for a long time, did not give satisfactory results. The newer tensionfree and laparoscopic techniques are more successful. Because of the numerous available methods, L.M. Nyhus developed a classification of inguinal hernias according to size and type of the defect and recommended the most suitable technique for each type. Two classical oeprations, Bassini's and Shouldice's, are described in detail and their shortcomings are explained. In conclusion, the author points out that a variety of methods are available for the inguinal hernia repair at present. Experience shows that the classical methods are less appropriate or even inappropriate. Probably, only time can tell which operative method is the most suitable for a given hernia type.
