Abstract     Surgical treatment of groin hernia in spite long tradition, high incidence and seemingly simplicity still brings up dilemmas of convenient surgical technique. Suture materials are, besides good surgical technique, an important factor in successful groin hernia repair. On one hand nowadays surgeon's every day's dilemma is which technique to use, from classical, tense, Bassini repair, to sutureless tensionfree repair. On the other hand many suture materials are offered from number of producers and proposed by literature. In practice the final choice of suture material often results from department tradition or personal preference of the surgeon's personal experisence. Nevertheless, the choice of suture materials used, should be based on biological characteristics of tissues which are repaired in classical groin hernia repair. Main characteristics of different suture materials which are currently used in groin hernia repair are discussed in the article. The main argument for final choice must be groin hernia recurrence rate and incidence of the other complications. Syntetic, nonabsorbable monofilament is most commonly proposed suture material for the classical groin hernia repair in adults in the literature.
