Abstract     Background. Hypermobility of the bladder neck and proximal urethra is thought to be one of the main causes of female stress urinary incontinence. The reason for its occurrence is the weakening of the supporting structures of the bladder and the urethra. Nowdays in surgical treatment of female stress urinary incontinence suprapubic approach has been ever more frequently used. Surgical suspension of the urinary bladder neck and the proximal urethra represents the indirect fixation of the stretched part of the endopelvic fascia. For a correct indication for operative treatment of a patient with urinary stress incontinence, hypermobility of the bladder neck must be evaluated before operation. Among morphological imaging modalities perineal ultrasound diagnostic echoscopy has several significant advantages over radiologic methods which have been in common use till now. Perinea) ultrasound is a simple, non-invasive, cheap, safe and reproducible diagnostic method of female urinary incontinence. Aim. To assess the efficacy of perineal ultrasound diagnostic echoscopy as a diagnostic method for the evaluation of female stress urinary incontinence. This study was undertaken in order to evaluate whether the bladder neck mobility during cough is a feasible and accurate diagnostic method in the preoperative evaluation of female stress urinary incontinence. Methods. A hundred and fifty females were included in the study. In the study group there were 100 females with clinically and urodinamically proven stress urinary incontinence. Patients were matched to 50 controls. When the diagnostic protocol was completed, women of both groups were scanned with perineal ultrasound in order to evaluate hypermobility of the bladder neck. Toshiba Diagnostic Ultrasound System SSA 250 with a semicircular linear 3.75 MHz abdominal probe was used. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
