Abstract     In accordance with the Environmental Protection Act and Water Act, the Ecologically Acceptable Flow (EAF) in the running waters should be determined for each section separately. The EAF was defined as the quantity and quality of the water, which remain ecological balance in the stream and in the riparian zone. Too large water abstractions are long-term and environmental unacceptable. The differences between interests of ecology and economy can be great, because the large water abstractions from the aspect of users of water are understandable. The concept of EAF is, that ecology and economy have their tolerant limits, within the consensus is possible. The State as the owner of natural resources has to assure the supervision on water abstractions and assurance of EAF. According the hydrological and ecological method, the EAF was evaluated on more than 100 different sections of running waters in Slovenia, for existent and planning water abstractions.
