Abstract     HELLP syndrome is a severe form of pre-eclampsia leading to a high maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. HELLP is an acronym for hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets. The dynamics of HELLP syndrome is manifested by con-stantly changing laboratory findings and by intensification of clinical signs. HELLP syndrome occurs in 4-12% of patients with severe pre-eclampsia and in 30-50%, of pregnant women with eclampsia. In multiparas, the HELLP syndrome occurs almost as frequently as in primiparas. One third of cases occurs after delivery. However, HELLP syndrome can also occur in pregnant women with normal blood pressure without proteinuria. In these cases, HELLP syndrome is especially difficult to recognize, and the patients are often misdiagnozed for a similar disease. Thus, it is not infrequent that the misdiagnozed patient is properly diagnozed at other hospital wards. Clinical picture of the disease is not characteristic, therefore the therapist should consider the possibility of HELLP syndrome in every pregnant woman with epigastric pain and poor general condition. The imepratif tor early diagnosis, extremely important with this disease, are appropriate laboratory tests and caretul consideration of clinical signs, as immediate termination of pregnancy prevents the disease to develop into its severest form.
