Abstract     I wanted to stress the importance of consistent peri and postpartum maternal and newborn monitoring especially with high risk pregnancies - women with prior illnesses, those given epidural analgesia and deliveries ended with surgery. Here, the same supervision, standards, and equipment is used as for all other surgical patients. The most frequent reason for the presence of an anesthesiologist in the delivery room besides surgery is hemorraghe. Antepartum hemorrhage occurs in 3 - 4% of all deliveries and often requires surgical treatment, while 2% of all childbirth in Slovenia result in postpartum bleedings. The condition of a foetus during childbirts is monitored with cardiotocography, which is advisable in all the cases and obligatory with high risk childbirths and with pH - monitoring. The life support of a newborn can be divided into elementary and advanced. All newborns receive the elementary treatment, which consists of a slight lateral and head-down position, nasopharyngeal suction gentle slapping of the feet (stimulation), drying the skin and maintaining normal newborn temperature. The advanced life support i.e. resuscitation consists of airway management and breathing by bag and mask, or endotrachela tube, intermittent positive pressure ventilation, cardiac massage, circulatory support, and pharmacologic treatment.
