Abstract     We investigated survival of patients with out-of-hospital collapse of non-cardiac etiology in Ljubljana according to the "Utstein style". Ljubljana is served by a single response emergency medical system consisting of ACLS team with general physician. Between January 1,1995, and December 31,1997, ACLS team confirmed cardiac arrest in 966 patients and attempted resuscitation in 454 of them (47%). Noncardiac etiology was assumed in 117 patients (26%). The median call response interval was 10 minutes (range 2-46 minutes). Cardiac arrest was preceded by either respiratory failure (41), trauma (22), circulatory shock (19), cerebrovascular incident (10), intoxication (9), strangulation (7), electrocution (5) or drowning (4). Collapse was bystander- witnessed in 69%, unwitnessed in 23%, and EMS-witnessed in 8% of patients. Asystole was documented in 72%, ventricular fibrillation or tachycardia in 3%, and other non-perfusing rhythms in 25% of patients. Lay-bystander CPR was performed in 21 % of patients. Any return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) could be achieved in 34% and 27% of patients were admitted to intensive care ward. Five patients (4.2%) survived to hospital discharge and 4 of them were independent in daily life. Multivariate analysis identified performance of lay-bystander CPR as the single predictor of ROSC, hospital admission and hospital discharge.
