Abstract     It is important for prehospital care physicians and emergency department physicians to have an understanding of ballistics as this applies to management of gunshot wounds. In caring for the gunshot wound patient, the ABC's of basic trauma cre should be followed first. It is next important to determine if the bullet wound was caused by a high or low velocity bullet which wound affect the surgical management and decision making. Next the need for additional pre-operative testing should be evaluated (if the patient is hemodynamically stable) and finally anti-tetanus and antibiotic coverage need to be remembered. Law enforcement authorities should be notified about any gunshot wound case even if it is accidental. Physicians should take a lead in gunshot wound injury prevention efforts.
