Abstract     Changes in the pattern of DNA methylation have been a consistent finding in cancer cells. Fourteen kidney tumors with no somatic mutation in the VHL locus were examined for methylation changes in 5'CpG island of exon 1. In 8 clear cell tumors hypermethylated cytosines were identified while no hypermethylation sites were observed in 6 papillary tumors. These results suggest that methylation of the VHL gene represents another important mechanism of tumor suppressor gene inactivation.
