Abstract     Five major viruses are the etiological agents responsible for most clinical cases of viral hepatitis: hepatitis A virus, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, defective hepatitis D or delta virus and hepatitis E virus. Recently, a new RNA virus was discovered which was provisionally designated hepatitis G virus. Although hepatitis G virus is indeed a parentally transmissible agent, its clinical significance is still unclear, since conflicting data have been documented concerning the association between virus and human disease. This article presents a brief overviw of the principles of current serological and molecular diagnosis of the major hepatitis viruses, with emphasis on the commercially available assays. Additionally article reviews the laboratory techniques which may be used to establish a diagnosis of perinatally acqured hepatitis infections.
