Abstract     Elevated blood pressure (EBP) is an important risk factor for development of cardiovascular diseases, most often cerebrovascular diseases. EBP is more often found in males with a positive history of EBP and are older than 20 years. Additional predictive factors for development of EBP are: unhealthy diet (too much salt in food, drinking alcohol over peasonable amounts), physical inactivity and body overweight. An overview (in year 1990/91) of a random sample of inhabitants from Ljubljana, age 25 to 64 (N=1692) demonstrated that only 61% of individuals have a normal blood pressure, in 20% the blood pressure is slightly elevated while others have a high blood pressure. We found in more than half of the normotensive individuals predictive factors for developing EBP. With a healthy style and regular monitoring of blood pressure we can prevent or at least postpone the evolvement of EBP. Likewise the treatment of slightly (bordeline) EBP and high blood pressure (besides drugs) is based on a healthy life style with an emphasis on a diet with minimal salst content and a reasonable alcohol consumption.
