Abstract     General practitioners become aware of the high risk of elevated plasma cholesterol during their study. Its detection and treatment are part of treatment in general practice. Some general practitioners do not fully use their opportunities for identifying and treating individuals at high risk of coronary heart disease, especially men. General practitioners have traditionally been trained in individual care and they play a major role in increasing public awareness and in modifying attitudes and health behavior. Therefore, identification of healthy individuals at high risk is the best done in general practice setting. The aim of the article is, to describe this part of work on randomly selected sample 200 men aged 36 - 65, during the period from June 1991 to June 1995. Total cholesterol level is ascertained in 56% of men, at least one risk factor is detected in 25,5% of men, 62,5% measurements are above 5,2 mmol/1, lipid-lowering diet is prescribed in 97,1%, control after 3 months is registrated in 50% - moderately and highly elevated total cholesterol level is decreased on 5,7%. Lipolitic therapy is inducted in 54,2% and specialist visit is ordered in 45,8%. The starting points for improvement of quality of care are given.
