Abstract     This diploma presents the basic characteristics of private medical doctors and dentists, who started private praxis in the years 1992 and 1993 in Slovenia, with accent on the main reasons for decision for private praxis, new organizational approach, economics and relationship to health insurance institute of Slovenia and public health service. Results based on analysis of the answers of private doctors to a questionnaire. For private praxis have decided mostly male doctors, dentists of age 30 to 40. Main reasons for decision for private praxis, as have private doctors expressed, were: possibility to offer better medical care, economic and professional independence, after that a wish for better earnings. The main characteristics of new organizational approach as have private doctors expressed, were: adaptation of working time to the patients needs, longer working time and shorter absence from work as legally permitted. A bad economic state of private praxis was confirmed by majority of private doctors, specially general practitioners, pediatricians and school doctors, due to specific additional organizational and financial obligations. In spite of lot of problems connected with private praxis, a majority of private doctors expressed readiness to start with private praxis again, if necessary. A fear, that health care would become worse due to private doctors wishes for better earnings was, on the base of the results of this research, confirmed to be baseless. Conclusions of this research are suggestions tor organizational changes in the public health service, based on some experiences of private doctors and suggestions for some changes in financial policy of health service to improve economic state of private praxis.
