Abstract     Background. We were interested in GPs' attitude towards their own behavior when they are sick. Methods. An anonymous questionnaire enquiring about expected or recommended behavior for 10 medical conditions was sent to 120 GP and 60 hospital specialists. Questions reffered to the time before any action would be taken and to expected or recomended action (self treatment, consulting another GP, consulting clinical specialist, other). Results. 80% of GPs and 65% of hospital specialists answered the questionnare. For half of chosen medical conditions general practitioners think, that they would choose self treatment . There is no significant difference as to how GP think they would act, if they were ill and what they would recommend another GP in case of their ill health. There is a major difference between GPs' opinion about expected and recomended action and hospital specialists' advice. Hospital specialists highly recommend general practitioner should consult another clinical specialist when being sick. General practitioners rarely think, that they would consult another GP when being sick.
