Abstract     Background: Ovarian cancer is the most frequent cause of death among gynaecologic malignancies. Over the last decade the incidence of ovarian cancer has not essentially changed, but its tendency is slightly growing. Epidemiological data show that environmental, hormonal and genetic factors are etiologically significant. Besides the already known risk factors, ovulation induction agents have been reported as risk factors in literature since 1986. Over the last two decades, ovulation induction agents have been widely used in the procedures of biomedically assisted procreation (BMAP). This study focused on the question whether in patients receiving ovulation idnuction agents the risk for developing pathologic processes on the ovaries was higher than in those not receiving ovulation induction agents yet. Besides, we aimed at finding whether the incidence of pathologic processes on the ovaries is associated with a specific ovulation induction agent and the dose. Methods: In a prospective study, carried out between autumn 1996 and spinrg 1998, 380 subjects were enrolled. The study group consisted of 280 women who had undergone a BMAP procedure three or more times and was a repesentative sample of the population of women enrolled in BMAP procedures. The control group consisted of 120 infertile women who had not been included in BMAP procedures yet. All the enrolled subjects underwent the same examinations: detailed gynaecologic history, pelvic examination, vaginal ultrasound, and a blood sample for tumour marker CA 125 was taken. The groups were compared using the hi power on 2 test and non-parametric t test. Logistic regression analysis was used to find the correlation between the incidence of ovarian pathology and the type and/or dose of the ovulation induction agent administered.(Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
