Abstract     Sediment analysis is very important in the investigations of the heavy metal burden in the environment. In the present work the use and the applicability of various digestion and extraction procedures was estimated in order to evaluate the extent of pollution with heavy metals in sediments from HE Moste hydroelectric reservoir. Total acid digestion, aqua regia soluble and acetic acid extraction procedures were applied in sample preparation. Zn, Cd, Pb, Co, Ni, Cu and Cr were determined by flame or electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS, ETAAS) under optimized measurement conditions. Comparison of total acid digestion including HF treatmenl and aqua regia soluble fraction was made to estimate the applicability of aqua regia disintegration in analysis of total metal concentration in sediments. The extraction procedure in 25% v/v acetic acid was also applied for estimation of the extent of pollution with heavy metals, originating from anthropogenic activities.
