Abstract     The parameters influencing the extraction efficiency of total water-soluble zinc, lead and cadmium in various soil samples were investigated. Water was added to moist soil samples and samples were shaken in a classical shaker. Variations of solution volume to soil weight ratio, and of shaking time were studied in order to develop the optimal extraction procedure for determination of total water-soluble zinc, lead and cadmium. The influence of filtration through various pore sizes of the membrane filters was investigated as well. Filtering through 0.2 lun membrane filters is recommended for removal of particles and colloids. Taking into consideration the homogeneity of the soil samples, and to avoid large volumes, volume per weight ratio 10 is proposed for analytical use. In common practice 20 cm3 of water and 2.00 g of moist soil samples should be shaken for 16 h for the determination of the total water-soluble zinc, lead and cadmium in soil samples.
